Should Arsenal snap up this Scotland Player of the Year candidate?

Virgil van DijkAll signs point to a busy summer for The Gunners. After a season where they’ve come so close (but have ultimately let things slip), it’s clear that some investment could help take Arsenal to the next level. Of course, that’s what we say every season, but it feels particularly true this time round.

As far as I can see, Arsenal have two key transfer priorities: sort out their defense and bring in a world-class centre-forward. Let’s take a look at the first issue.

Arsenal’s best centre-back pairing is Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny. The little and large, German and French combo have worked wonders this season and have managed to keep Arsenal in games that they’ve had no right to be in.

Unfortunately, they’ve also played their part in some of the Gunners’ biggest defeats this season. The two of them clearly need a bit more confidence (And protection) when they’re playing against the Premier League big boys.

Beyond these two, there’s Thomas Vermaelen, who has never looked quite the same since he earned the Arsenal captaincy. That cross just seems to much to bear for the Belgian talent and I’m not sure how much longer he’ll remain at the Emirates. As there’s no options beyond him, The Gunners could certainly do with scouring the transfer market for somebody else.

This brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that Arsenal are circling Celtic’s highly-regarded Dutch centre-back, Virgil van Dijk. Why wouldn’t they be when he’s got such an impressive name? The 22-year-old also has some decent credentials. He’s been a key part of Neil Lennon’s side this season and is even up for Scotland’s Player of the Year award. Quite a result for such a young player.

His agent recently claimed that his client has been attracting some ‘absolute top clubs’. Could Arsenal be among their ranks?

He’s under contract until 2017, but if The Gunners offer enough money, I’m sure Celtic will sell up. What’s more, I’m sure that the Dutchman would fancy a move to the Emirates, were he extended the opportunity.

As a second, or third choice centre-back, I can’t think of anybody better. He could go on to be something very special indeed.

What’s your take? Should The Gunners make a move for Celtic’s Virgil van Dijk?
