Is this Tottenham star REALLY worth £100m?

Hugo LlorisManagers like Tim Sherwood (and Andre VIllas-Boas before him) are in a tough position. Whilst their team as a whole isn’t good enough to compete for silverware or for Champions League action, they do have a few stand-out players who tend to attract the attention of the European elite.

As a result, Spurs usually spend every summer fending off the advances of rival clubs who are interested in their players. If it’s not Gareth Bale, it’s Luka Modric. Each time one of their stars packs their bags, Tottenham are left to re-build the squad and try again. The result is one transitional season after another as the club struggles to find its feet.

There was a wealth of good feeling around White Hart Lane last summer, as AVB spent big on multiple players in an attempt to replace the outgoing Gareth Bale. The Welsh wing-wizard was far and away the club’s best player (and one of the best footballers in the world), so Spurs used the £85.3m they got from his sale to add depth to the squad and provide better balance to the team.

This makes me wonder. Will Spurs face similar difficulties this summer? Will another club come in for their best player?

This brings me to Hugo Lloris, who I would argue has been the club’s most consistent player this season. He’s kept Tottenham in games they had no right to remain in. His excellent shot-stopping and quick reactions make him the Premier League’s best.

This is why Tim Sherwood has been talking him up in recent weeks. The Spurs manager also seems keen to scare other clubs away. Check out these comments:

“He is one of the best keepers around. Of course, people are going to want him. But I’m also sure the club won’t be tempted to get rid of him. He is one of the top goalies and unless someone is going to spend £100million on him – and keepers do not get bought for that money – I don’t think he will leave.”

“It was only that kind of figure that tempted the club to sell Gareth Bale – and he desperately wanted to leave and progress his career at Real Madrid.” (Source: The Mirror)

Sherwood is right. Keepers don’t get sold for that kind of money (neither do outfield players, for that matter). This is just an arbitrary sum he’s using to scare other clubs away. I’m sure if Spurs were to be offered £30m+ for their keeper, Daniel Levy would be given pause for thought.

Every players has their price as the Gareth Bale situation has proven. Spurs just need to calculate the price it would take to replace him and then make sure that they’re able to turn a profit form the sale.

Regardless, I hope that Sherwood’s comments have the desired effect. Wouldn’t it be something for Spurs to go an entire summer without losing a key player?

What’s your take? How much is Hugo Lloris worth to Spurs?

I imagine anything over £20million would be enough.

He only has 2 seasons left on his current contract and if the big boys come he will want to move.

You can argue that as much as you like but you’re wrong – he’s been as inconsistent as anyone else … as he was on Monday night for the Sunderland goal.

Along with Vertonghen he’s been the one saying he’ll leave if we don’t make CL this season, while simultaneously being the cause of not getting there in the 1st place – adios to the pair of you …
