Is it too late for Arsenal to sign this £8m bargain?

TorschützeFor Arsenal, this season seems to have played out like one long reminder to Arsene Wenger: you should have bought another striker last summer. Oh, and when you realised this early on in the season, you should have rectified the situation in the January transfer market.

Wenger’s failure to properly bolster his attack seems to have been The Gunners undoing. They’ve spent large swathes of the year on the top of the Premier League table, but they’ve loosened their grip in the business end of the season. I can’t help but feel that this is down to the club’s lack of firepower.

Olivier Giroud’s done an okay job as Arsenal’s leading man (his recent goal against West Ham was very impressive indeed), but I can’t help but feel that he’s not quite the right option for the Gunners. With all the passing and moving that Arsene Wenger expects from his charges, they need a player who can spring to life with a second’s notice and capitalise on all the excellent build-up play. Giroud is just too sluggish and his technique is often lacking.

Luckily, The Mirror recently published an article suggesting that The Gunners are still in the market to sign Nurnberg’s brilliant young centre-forward, Josip Drmic. The Swiss-born striker has been in fine fettle this season, scoring 16 goals in as few as 29 appearances. All this and he’s only 21-years-old. No wonder Arsenal are interested.

As The Mirror notes, there had previously been some speculation that Bayer Leverkusen had already wrapped up a deal for the young striker. Luckily, Leverkusen’s technical director, Rudi Voller, has moved to rubbish these reports:

“Drmic is an interesting player. But I also know other clubs [are interested]. [Pre contract agreement] that is nonsense.”

That’s great news and it leaves the door wide open for Arsenal to burst in and snap him up. The Star ran an article earlier in the month suggesting that he could be available for as little as £8m. That’s certainly within the club’s price range.

I hope he’s not the only striker that Arsene Wenger signs this summer, but if he’s the first, then the Gunners will be off to a good start. The more firepower that Arsenal turn up with next season, the better prepared they’ll be to perform on multiple fronts.

What’s your take? Is Josip Drmic a good choice for Arsenal?
