Is it now title or bust for Liverpool?

Brendan RodgersUndoubtedly the form team in the EPL title race, Liverpool are looking in great shape to win the Barclay’s Premier League for the first time. They are unbeaten in the league this calendar year.

The duo of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge are truly one of the great Premiership parings of all time and Steven Gerrard is giving it one last hurrah to finally win a league trophy. Is this Liverpool’s best chance to win the title for the foreseeable future?

Rodgers has done a great job on a limited budget at Liverpool and has transformed the club over the last 12 months into a formidable force once again. Nevertheless there is no denying that without Luis Suarez, Liverpool would not be challenging for the title at this point.

The Uruguayan’s 29 goals in 31 games have been phenomenal and has put him in the conversation as one of the world’s best players. However, if Liverpool do not win the league will the 27 year-old once again try and force a move away from Anfield?

Rumours have been circulating all season that Real Madrid are poised to strike a deal for the forward this summer and everyone knows when Madrid come calling you don’t turn them down.

If Suarez was to leave, Liverpool would be down a superstar and recent times have shown Liverpool have failed to attract superstars. The likes of Yevhen Konoplyanka, Mohammed Salah, Willian, Gylfi Sigurdsson and even Tom Ince have rejected the chance to join Liverpool in recent times.

This has left Liverpool short of depth and will need to be addressed with Champions League football back on the agenda for Liverpool. Obviously UCL football will mean more players will be interested in signing for Liverpool once again, but if the wage structure doesn’t allow them to sign players the calibre their top 4 rivals do, they could once again be left behind.

Another key factor as to why they have struggled to sign younger players, is the fact young players no longer grow up idolising the Liverpool teams of the 80’s, which used to be a big pull.

Liverpool have also benefited from having a settled squad knowing the manager’s ideology for a sustained period of time. This is untrue for 5 of their 6 closest rivals, who are all going through a transitional period under new mangers and new systems.

Liverpool have capitalized from top half teams underestimating them this season. Teams haven’t respected Liverpool and have pushed higher up the pitch and tried to outplay them. This has meant teams are losing possession in key areas of the pitch and are being burned on the break. Teams will soon adjust and try to limit the space Liverpool have to play into, before counter attacking their weak defence.

In 2009 Liverpool finished 2nd after a big title collapse and it has taken 5 years for them to get back in contention. Liverpool’s sensational form is more than just a blip, they will need a big summer if they are to be challenging for the title again this time next year.

What a badly executed hatchet job. This is nothing but a classical case of sour grape syndrome. Or how else on planet earth can you explain the superstar tag on players like Konoplyanka, Willian, Sigurdsson, Salah and of all people Tom Ince. What has any of this your so called hyper superstars achieved in the beautiful game to warrant such a labelling. The incontrovertible reality today is that all of your aforementioned not-so-super-stars will kill to be afforded the chance to turn out for the men in red, for obvious reasons. This should in all honesty not be seen as an attack on the personality and capabilities of these decent players of varying qualities, but for you to paint their failure to sign up with us a REJECTION BYSUPERSTARS is nothing but FLIMSY & COSMETICS. YNWA!!!
