Theo Walcott has often been accused of lacking a ‘footballing brain’. As such, it’s quite remarkable how devoid of ideas Arsenal have looked without the pacey winger.
With Olivier Giroud playing alone upfront, Arsenal lack pace and they lack penetration. Earlier in the season, when Mesut Ozil was pinging balls in behind for Theo Walcott, The Gunners looked menacing every time they came forward. As a result, they clambered up to the top of the Premier League table.
Since these two got injured, however, it’s all been downhill. Arsene Wenger just can’t afford to let this happen again next season. His reputation is already in tatters as it is.
According to The Mirror Arsenal are one of a number of club’s interested in Real Sociedad’s wily winger, Antoine Griezmann. The other clubs are Manchester United, Liverpool, Everton and Paris Saint Germain, so The Gunners are in fine company.
Of course, Arsene Wenger may be able to play the French card to help attract the young French international (but could he out-French PSG? I don’t think so). Out of the Premier League clubs listed, I’m sure that Arsenal will have the most appeal for Griezmann.
As it happens, The Frenchman has been in the form of his life this season. He’s made 46 appearances for Sociedad and has already managed to find the back of the net 20 times. Not bad for a 23-year-old, eh? This is a player who looks set for the big time. If Arsenal can get a hold of him, it’d be quite a ‘get’.
The aforementioned source suggests that he could costs as much as £20m. That’s no small amount of cash, but it’s not out of Arsene Wenger’s price-range. He’s proven that he’s ready to be ambitious in the transfer market. Now he just needs to ramp things up again.
If he pulls off this deal, then who knows? Maybe The Gunners won’t have to be so reliant on Theo Walcott after all.
