Can Arsenal afford to chase this £40m talent?

Romelu LukakuRomelu Lukaku has had a good season, but is he really worth £40m? That’s the price that The Daily Mail claim Chelsea will demand for their striker in the summer transfer window.

That’s despite the fact that he’s just 20-years-old and has limited experience playing for a top team. In fact, he’s made just 15 appearances for The Blues and has scored 0 goals. On that basis, it’s difficult to see what all the fuss is about.

It’s his exploits out on loan (and back in Belgium) that have been so impressive. In four seasons with Anderlecht he made 98 appearances and scored 41 goals. That’s a fine return for a player who was still essentially a teenager (albeit a physically imposing teenager).

Whilst on loan at West Brom last season, he managed to scored 17 goals in 38 games for a struggling side. This year, he’s already grabbed 14 goals whilst on loan at Everton. He may not have much experience playing for a top club, but he’s got plenty of Premier League experience and he’s excelled over the last two seasons.

All this and he’s only 20-years-old. If he continues to progress at this rate, he’s going to blossom into a world-class centre-forward. He could well be the next Didier Drogba and that’s why The Mail suggests he could cost as much as £40m.

The aforementioned source also suggests that Arsenal are interested in the Chelsea centre-forward (along with Tottenham and Everton).

This must be music to the ears of Arsenal fans. Olivier Giroud has struggled to make an impact all season long and adding somebody with the pace, physical presence and pure goal-scoring ability of Romelu Lukaku could make all the difference for The Gunners.

Having spent £42.4m on Mesut Ozil last summer, it’s unclear whether Arsenal have the financial firepower to drag another big-money deal across the line.

But given their current need, I’d love to see Arsene Wenger try. Now we just have to see whether Jose Mourinho would be willing to sell to a title rival.

What’s your take? Would Romelu Lukaku be the solution to Arsenal’s current lack of cut and thrust up front?
