Edinson CavaniIt must be depressing being a Manchester United fan at this stage of the season. They’re forced to watch the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea duke it out for the Premier League title, whilst they’re stuck in mid-table stasis. Heck, even Arsenal are in with a good shot of winning the FA Cup. The Red Devils, on the other hand, have nothing to play for.

Aside from a fun jaunt in the Champions League, nothing seems to have gone United’s way this season. They haven’t been able to compete against the big boys and they’ve been caught with their pants down on a number of occasions against the so-called Premier League small fry.

Something needs to give. Fans are crying out for a big money signing to help turn things around and at this stage, I can’t help but feel that this would be the best move that the club could make at this stage in their evolution.

This brings me nicely to The Star‘s ‘EXCLUSIVE’ claim that Manchester United are looking to tie up a deal for PSG’s Edinson Cavani.

The Uruguayan centre-forward is one of the deadliest finishers in Europe and is sure to command a huge price-tag. In fact, the aforementioned source suggests that United will offer Paris Saint Germain £50m plus their hapless winger, Nani, in an attempt to close the deal.

That’s certainly a lot of money, but it’s probably just below market value for a player who hasn’t stopped scoring for four seasons now. He scored 104 goals in 138 games at Napoli. Since moving to Paris he has found the back of the net 22 times in 37 appearances (that’s despite playing in Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s shadow and being forced out wide on a number of occasions).

Compared to Nani (11 appearances, 1 goal), Edinson Cavani is clearly the real deal. I can only imagine the influence he’d have at Manchester United.

If David Moyes is looking to wrap up a big-money, marquee signing this summer, then he’d do well to look at Edinson Cavani. I’ll certainly be keeping my fingers crossed.

What’s your take? Would you like to see this Uruguayan ace make his way to Old Trafford? Should United be looking at other areas of their squad?
