Over the summer, the cries of the ‘Wenger out’ crowd got louder and louder. It reached a stage whereby they completely drowned out the more level-headed individuals among the Emirates faithful.
Now that Arsene Wenger has signed Mesut Ozil, the Wenger out crowd has received a gagging order. After all, in the few comments Ozil has made since the transfer, he has highlighted the role Wenger played. Check out these quotes:
“Firstly, I’m really looking forward to it because I have the faith of the coach. I had spoken to him at length on the telephone and he explained his plans and that he has faith in me and that is what I need as a player.” (Source: Arsenal.com)
Is it possible to believe that Arsene Wenger made a barrage of mistakes this summer and still believe that he’s the best man for the job? I’d argue that it is possible. This point of view doesn’t require any kind of double-think or self-deception.
Arsene shouldn’t have left all the signings so late. The club should have gone into it’s opening game of the season better prepared. The fact that it didn’t is down to Le Prof himself.
Then there’s the fact that Arsenal failed to sign a striker and a defender this summer, despite their being a clear and pressing need. Having shipped out Johan Djourou, Sebastien Squallaci, and Ignasi Miquel (who is out on loan), I’m surprised Wenger didn’t bring anybody in.
Then there’s the fact that Olivier Giroud is Arsenal’s out-and-out striker. If he gets injured, or if the goals dry up, the Gunners could be in some serious trouble.
The squad still lacks strength in depth and for this, Wenger should be held accountable. But whilst the squad is light in numbers, it now has enough star power to start competing at the very top of the Premier League. For the first time in a long while, I’m genuinely excited about what the future holds for Arsenal.
And no matter how you try and twist it, that’s down to Arsene Wenger. Mesut Ozil is an Arsene Wenger signing, who agreed to move to Arsenal because he was excited to work alongside one of world football’s best managers.
Who else in world football is available to manage Arsenal and provide this level of attraction for world-class talent?
Perhaps this’ll keep the ‘Wenger out’ crowd silent for a while?
What’s your take? What role did Arsene Wenger play in Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil deal?
