Arsene Wenger has spent the last three months being football’s most put upon man. Fans and pundits alike have been on the Frenchman’s back. The chant has been fairly consistent throughout: ‘Spend some money!’ (although the chant often game with additional expletives.
Well, he’s done what was asked of him. Arsenal can now welcome Mesut Ozil to their ranks, a £42.4m signing, fresh from Real Madrid. That’s almost three times more than the spent on their last transfer-record buster, Andrey Arshavin.
As a signal of intent, Arsene Wenger can’t have been any clearer. Arsenal mean business this season and with a player like Ozil in tow, who knows what the club can achieve?
Any one who has seen Ozil’s performances for Real Madrid, or at international level (where he has scored a remarkable 14 goals in 47 appearances) will attest that he’s the real deal. The German has quick feet, an agile mind and the ability to cut through defenses with ease.
The Emirates will fit him like a glove, as he’s well accustomed to quick, accurate passing. The thought of him playing alongside the likes of Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere is nothing short of mouth-watering. This is extremely exciting times for Arsenal fans.
Some may claim that Arsene Wenger has strengthened the one area of Arsenal’s squad that doesn’t need it. I don’t buy that. Tomas Rosicky and Abou Diaby always have injury problems. Jack Wilshere usually spends a long portion of the season out on the sidelines. What’s more, Rosicky and Cazorla can both play out wide if necessary.
But let’s not forget, that Ozil stands a good chance of establishing himself as the best midfielder in the Premier League over the next couple of years. It seems a bit churlish to argue over whether Arsenal ‘need him’.
Whilst other clubs (let’s not name names) stood still and others splurged on quantity rather than quality, Arsene stood firm to his values and brought in a player with ‘super quality’. Moreover, he’s a 24-year-old with his whole future ahead of him who’s already looks to be at the top of his game. Good on him.
You can’t help but feel that it bodes well for Arsenal’s season. Will we look back on this signing as a tipping point in the Gunners battle for silverware? I wouldn’t bet against it.
What’s your take? Just how important a signing is Mesut Ozil for Arsenal? Is he the best signing of the summer transfer window?
