Whilst Spurs have made some smart additions to their squad and already look considerably stronger, they’ve yet to properly deal with the club’s most pressing weakness.
I’m talking about the centre-forward position. Do Spurs really have enough goals in them to secure fourth spot?
Yes, Roberto Soldado was brought in to be the club’s main out-and-out goal-scorer. From what we’ve seen already, he’s going to fit in extremely nicely in the Premier League.
But he can’t secure Spurs Champions League football on his own. If a top four finish is to be acquired, a few other players need to chip in. At the moment it’s difficult to see who might do this.
Emmanuel Adebayor always looks completely disinterested, whilst Jermaine Defoe is getting on in years and may well switch clubs before the transfer window slams shut.
Given this, I’d like to see Tottenham bring in another striker, to provide Roberto Soldado with the competition he needs. A bit of motivation never hurt anybody.
Luckily enough, The Star claim that Spurs are on ‘red alert’ for their long-term transfer target, Leandro Damiao. The bad news is that Liverpool are also thought to be interested. Should Andre Villas-Boas duke it out with Brendan Rodgers, or should he let him go?
The player himself seems to be open to a move. At the very least, he has a ‘what will be, will be’ kind of attitude:
“The first time I was sounded out, I was happy, but I have to overcome that now, I am focused on Internacional, it has to be a good offer for me and the club.
A lot was said. I am calm, nothing has come and I am still focused on Internacional and in the Brazilian Cup. If a very good offer comes, then maybe it could happen.”
What a ‘very good offer’ would amount to is unclear (Southampton have already had an £18m bid turned down this summer). However, I do feel that Spurs have to fight Liverpool in this case.
Damiao is an extremely exciting player. He’s a natural goal-scorer and he has excellent technical ability to boot. He may well have a similar impact for Spurs as Luis Suarez has had for Liverpool.
Not to put too much pressure on him. Whoever eventually signs him will have pulled off a real coup. Let’s hope AVB can agree yet another excellent signing for Spurs, regardless of Liverpool’s best efforts to derail the deal.
What’s your take? Would you like to see Leandro Damiao finally get his move to White Hart Lane?
