Mamadou Sakho, a French senior international and Paris Saint Germain star, has been attracting a fair amount of attention over the last week or so. In particular, it seems that Liverpool are hovering over the player, waiting for their opportunity to swoop in and sign him up.
There’s a reason why so much attention has been afforded to the 23-year-old. Despite his young age, he’s already earned a fantastic reputation and is regarded as one of the best defenders in Europe.
Whilst he primarily plays as a centre-back, he’s also been deployed as a left-back and has the energy and drive to play as a defensive midfielder. This versatility is sure to be appealing to his suitors.
But he offers much, much more. He’s known for his hard-working attitude, his strong, effective tackling and the tactical side of his game. Sakho is adept at reading the game and using his pace and power to break up play.
During his time at PSG, he’s proven to be remarkably consistent. He’s also earned 14 caps for France.
Those are some impressive credentials. It was thus interesting to see that he had put in a transfer request and desired to leave Paris. Sakho was a PSG star before the club recieved its major cash-infusion and has slowly and surely been squeezed out of the first team.
Given that the World Cup is fast approaching, it looks like he’s on the hunt for regular football once more.
The Reds made an £8m for the French defender earlier this month, but given the player’s current situation and the question marks surrounding the futures of Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel, it wouldn’t surprise me if Liverpool went back in for the player.
As replacements for the two aforementioned players go, I can think of few better (or more affordable) options than Mamadou Sakho.
I’m sure PSG are able to offer him some pretty fantastic wages to sit on the bench, so I admire the fact that he’s willing to leave in order to get more playing time.
Sakho is a man of impressive character and I’m sure he’d be another fantastic addition to this Liverpool squad.
What’s your take? Should Brendan Rodgers make another bid for the Ligue 1 ace?
