Arsenal’s tepid, uninspiring approach to the transfer market has cost the club. Whilst Arsene Wenger still has time to put the money he has to spend to good use, the fact remains that many good opportunities have already been missed this summer.
It’s clear to everyone affiliated with the club, from fans, to pundits alike, that the Gunners need to sign a striker this summer. Even the top brass seem to acknowledge it – that’s surely why the club has been so interested in the likes of Stevan Jovetic, Gonzalo Higuain and Luis Suarez.
Robin Van Persie left the club 12 months ago now, but his absence can still be felt throughout the Emirates. Olivier Giroud was drafted in, but the Frenchman simply can’t be expected to provide the same impact as Arsenal’s former captain.
Unfortunately, all of Arsenal’s transfer targets are already answered for. Stevan Jovetic moved to Manchester City and Gonzalo Higuain moved to Napoli. Even Luis Suarez is beginning to patch up his relationship with Liverpool, having started training with the first team once more.
Arsenal have to go in for Wayne Rooney for this reason: there’s no other top striker left on the market this summer.
The Gunners have shown up late to the party and all the pretty girls are taken. Indeed, they can count their lucky stars that a player like Wayne Rooney is still available. But the question does need to be asked: would the England International be willing to take a step down from Manchester United to Arsenal?
That remains to be seen.
Either way, it would take a considerable sum of money to tempt Manchester United into selling. Despite his troubles over the last year or so, Wayne remains one of the most naturally gifted strikers in world-football.
The way he combines hard-graft, technique and pure goal-scoring ability is a sight to behold. He’s not your typical Arsenal striker by any means, but he may be exactly what the club needs in this period of time.
Let’s just hope that Arsene Wenger doesn’t leave this one too late — again!
What’s your take? Could the Gunners really pull off an audacious deal for Wayne Rooney?
