Erik Lamela is a name that we’re going to hear a lot more of over the coming years. The Serie A star is already building a fine reputation with Roma, but you get the feeling that bigger things lie ahead of him. He’s a player with boundless potential.
The young forward is fleet of foot and has an eye for goal. He caught the eye last season with his mazy running, controlled dribbling and willingness to take players on. These qualities make him an extremely exciting player to watch, especially when he’s using his quick feet to beat his man, before turning the after-burners on and blasting through on goal.
Still, a lot of young stars excel in their build-up play and offer every little by means of end product. Not so with Erik Lamela. Last season the Argentinian scored 15 goals in 35 games and also registered 6 assists. That’s a fantastic return for a 21-year-old.
But his good form has earned him a considerable amount of attention from the European elite. In particular, Spurs are thought to be interested. According to The Star, Tottenham are ready to make their move for the youngster. This news should have fans very excited indeed.
Best of all, any Spurs deal for Lamela will not be reliant upon what happens with Gareth Bale this summer. If Tottenham end up with both players when the transfer window slams shut, they’ll be very well placed this season.
Still signing Lamela could well prove to be as difficult as keeping hold of Bale has been. His current Roma deal runs until 2016 and the Giallorossi rate him very highly. Despite his age, Lamela is among the club’s best players and it’ll take a figure of around £30m to tempt them to sell.
Spurs have already spent a considerable amount of cash this summer, but this would be their biggest signing yet. It would act as a signal of intent for other clubs duking it out for fourth place. Signingly Lamela would certainly give Arsenal, who have been stagnating this summer, something to think about.
What impact he’d make in his first season in the Premier League is unclear. But one thing’s for sure: he’s due for a big future and if Spurs can get the player to come to White Hart Lane, they’ll have pulled off a real coup.
What’s your take? Should Spurs splash the cash on Erik Lamela?
