Why this £20m man could make all the difference for Tottenham next season:

|

Joao MoutinhoTottenham’s biggest January transfer window disappointment? Failing to secure FC Porto’s talented midfielder, Joao Moutinho on deadline day.

There’s no doubting that Spurs have had an excellent season. For Andre Villas Boas to be challenging for Champions League football in his first season at the club is a feat in itself. But what could he have achieved had he got the man he went after?

For a start, there would be no further talk of Tottenham as a ‘one man team’. These accusations may be a little unfair, but Spurs have lent rather heavily on Gareth Bale at times this year. He’s always been a sensational talent, but this has been the year where the Welsh wizard has really announced himself.

His goals, his pace, his all-round build up play, have been such a delight to behold that the rest of the Spurs team seem to be trapped in his shadow.

I don’t put Joao Moutinho in the same League as Bale (very few are), but he is a very exciting talent. One that would be sure to make his mark in the Premier League and at White Hart Lane.

He would certainly have been an astute replacement for Luka Modric and the creative deficit that rose up when he left for Real Madrid.

Moutinho has a lovely range of passes and can more or less put the ball wherever he likes it one a football pitch. He also thinks quickly and works fast, creating gaps in defenses, opening the door for strikers. He’s a player I’d love to see at Spurs.

According to The Express, the 26-year-old is set to leave FC Porto this summer, with the Premier League his ‘preferred destination’. AVB managed him during Porto’s treble-winning season – could the pair be about to link up again? It’s claimed that Moutinho has a £20m.

This may seem like a lot of money at first glance. But for a player like Moutinho, it’d be a worthy investment. The Portuguese ace has the class and potential to push Spurs onwards to bigger and better things.

He could make them competitive in the Champions League, help them compete for domestic silverware and establish Tottenham as a regular top-four side.

He could be their midfield lynchpin. So maybe he’s worthy of his price-tag?

What’s your take? Should AVB finally seal a deal for Joao Moutinho?

His goals? he really isn’t very prolific, not even that creative, a good pass and move player with a great work rate but none the less rather overhyped and overpriced

  • Paul Ivanov says:

Absolutely spot on. We need player like Mautinho to play in our midfield. He is a class midfielder and an one to one replacement for Modric. £20 million is also not bad for his quality and age. Go for it Levy

  • Elvis says:

Christian Erikson will go for 20 mil or less, far younger player, similar ability, bags of potential!

  • Steve H. says:

If we are to sell “Bale” then “Moutinho” would be a good target along with one other.
