Could this £12m ex-Everton star be the perfect fit for Liverpool?

Joleon Lescott has filled in well for Kolo Toure this seasonLiverpool have been let down by their defence on a number of occasions this season. This is somewhat strange, given the Reds tendency for breeding high-quality, towering defensive behemoths.

One thing’s for sure: it can’t continue over the course of next season. If Brendan Rodgers doesn’t find a way of applying a proper fix to Liverpool’s leaky defense, they can kiss goodbye any chance of silverware in the near future.

Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel have let inconsistency creep into their game and I think they need a healthy dose of competition to inspire them once more. Nothing raises performance levels quicker than the knowledge that your place in the team – maybe in the squad – is under threat.

Then there’s Jamie Carragher, Liverpool’s experienced centre-back, who is said to be retiring at the end of the season. Whilst he’s certainly been off the pace over the last few years, Carragher’s know-how and footballing nous will be sorely missed.

The quicker Rodgers lines up a replacement, the better.

Which brings me to a story in the Chesire Times (an excellent source, I’m sure you’ll agree), that claims that Liverpool have ‘made enquiries’ with Manchester City, regarding England defender, Joleon Lescott.

When Joleon Lescott first joined City, it must have been assumed that he was set for a long, prosperous career at the Etihad. That’s why City were willing to splash £20m (plus add-ons) for the Everton centre-back.

The only issue is City’s constant need to spend money, bring new players in and ‘mix things up’. There’s now too much competition at the Etihad and Lescott has found himself slipping down the pecking order as a result. He’s now one of those players who often features for England, despite never earning regular football with his club.

Lescott would fit in with Liverpool’s philosophy of buying British’. Despite his Everton background, he does strike me as a perfect fit for the Reds. He’s an astute, imposing defender, with experience at all levels of the game. He’s confident and is raring to go. More than this, however, it’s claimed he’d be available for just £12m. That’s a decent price for an England international.

I’m not sure Brendan Rodgers will be able to find better. When he does get around to drawing a list of Liverpool targets, I hope Lescott is somewhere near the top.

What’s your take? Would you like to see this former Everton star at Liverpool?

Not sure where £12m comes from either, I heard he only has a year left on his contract so would be around the £4m mark!

But then Liverpool did over pay on Carroll so perhaps they are looking to over pay again!

At least you reds have your cup final this weekend.

Hamada . Do you understand what net spend means. It’s different to gross. It works like this. Sell player for £10m buy one for £5m = net positive of £5m or sell player
£50m buy donkey for £35m positive return of £15m then waste money on paying off has been manager and Henderson.

    • mido says:

everton net spend on transfer fees alone in the last 7 seasons is £ 19.8 million

Not counting agent fees+signing on fees+taxes+f.f.r taxes+loyatlity bonus+regestration fee+fa fee (part of any incoming transfer)
Not coutning either that outgoings get : % of any transfer goes to the player+ agent fees+ remaining contract compensation+ free players get a package of their remaing wages etc.
before you call anyone clueless and lie look in the mirror and try to undersand that you are the only clueless chicken
