The kind of player that Tottenham SHOULD be getting linked with?

When the January transfer window re-opens, one player who is sure to take up plenty of tabloid inches is Inter Milan midfielder, Wesley Sneijder.

The Dutchman has had a tough season with Milan and has been unable to ingratiate himself back into the team following a long-term injury and a summer’s worth of flirting with other clubs.

He just doesn’t seem to be in favour anymore and this has led to him getting dropped. I doubt a player of his quality is happy with his current lot. If the right club comes knocking, I’m sure he’ll be ready to jump ship.

Naturally, he’s already been linked to Tottenham, who are on the hunt for a quality midfielder.

Unfortunately, Andres Villas-Boas has already admitted that there is ‘no truth’ in these rumours. What’s more, one of Sneijder’s representatives shot down the link, claiming: ‘There is nothing, absolutely nothing true about that’. (Source: The Independent).

Pretty definitive, I’d say. Also, somewhat disappointing for hopeful Spurs fans.

Tottenham are fourth place in the Premier League table (at the time of writing), level on points with Everton and West Brom. With Arsenal only three points off, with a game in hand, the fight for fourth place is going to be a tough one this season.

As such, Andres Villas-Boas is going to need all hands on deck, along with a couple of high-quality signings this January.

If he fails to secure players of sufficient quality, he may well seed fourth place directly to Tottenham’s north London rivals.

It’s an eventuality that Tottenham fans have been forced to put up with for too long now. Spurs inability to see out the course has cost them big before (not least last season, when they let Arsenal overturn a 13 point gap) but that can’t happen this time round.

There may not be any truth to the claims that Tottenham are pursuing Wesley Sneijder, but that doesn’t change the fact that he’s the kind of player that Spurs should be pursuing. A world-class talent who would make an instant impact in the Premier League.

A couple of additions along these lines and fourth place may well become a certainty.

What’s your take? Who should Andres Villas-Boas be looking at in the transfer market to bolster this Spurs side?
