A minor, but important player to start Liverpool’s January transfer bonanza:

We’ve already seen the Reds get linked to all and sundry in the run-up to the January transfer window. First up, there’s Daniel Sturridge and Thomas Ince and then there’s Franco Di Santos and numerous others.

Brendan Rodgers will be in for a busy transfer window, but should he play his cards right, he may breathe hope back into Liverpool supporters.

Ideally, this January will make Liverpool a competitive force once-more. The Reds have been a neutered force for all too long and it’s about time they got back to their virulent best. Liverpool fans are a cocksure bunch for a reason – they’re used to success. It’s about time that the top-brass found a way of helping Liverpool challenge for trophies once more.

So, where better to start than at the back?

As much as I hate to admit it, Pepe Reina, at 30-years-old, isn’t half the player he was when he was 28. The Spaniard has been an ever-present fixture in this Liverpool side and has set any number of goalkeeping records, but now his time may be up.

Mistakes are becoming a regular feature of his game, he isn’t able to command the penalty area like he used to and his famed distribution just isn’t spurring the Reds into life any more.

This is where Jack Butland comes into the picture. The 19-year-old Birmingham City has been strongly linked to Liverpool with a January move. (Source: The Mirror). I think he’s the ideal long-term replacement for Pepe Reina and a great way to kick-off Liverpool’s January spending spree.

As The Mirror point out, City aren’t exactly in the best place financially and may be willing to sell Butland to steady the ship. If Rodgers can persuade the Blues to cough up, he’ll receive one of the best young shot-stoppers in the world.

The young English International is agile, quick to react and vocal. Sure he makes the occasional mistake, but these will soon drop out of his game. There’s every chance that he’ll be one of the best in the world before his first Liverpool contract reaches its end.

Birmingham City rate him highly and he’s got a big future on the International scene for England. Now’s the time for Liverpool to try and snap him up.

What’s your take? Should Liverpool look towards Jack Butland as a long-term replacement for Pepe Reina?

Exactly what I’ve been crying out on my blog as well. Reina just isn’t as good anymore. Time to look for a better long term solution like Man U have done with De Gea

You be doing too much acid boy !!
Values are more like Henderson £3m, Downing £2m, Reina £4m, Carroll £7.5m & Cole -£3.6m. Players are on high wages that nobody else will match so we’ll either have to give them away or pay off wages. Joe Cole had several options and signed on a free so why would you walk away when ultimately Liverpool have commited to pay £100k per week.
