Is Tim Cahill’s time up at Everton?

According to the Daily Mail and The Sydney Morning Herald, United Arab Emirates club Al Nasr are chasing Everton midfielder Tim Cahill’s signature.

Everton’s precarious financial situation is one of the main reasons that the club would be prepared to sell their former talisman, to help generate funds to bring in new players as well as keeping the likes of Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines at the club.

Cahill has been linked with Al Nasr several times for the past few weeks, and has today come out and spoke about his love of the Middle East – heightening transfer speculation.

“All these sort of elements of speculation will be dealt with after camp. It is always a compliment. I am a massive fan of the Middle East, the cultures, the people.”

“I have travelled a lot and I respect them a lot. For me, it is just to focus on the Socceroos and we will see what happens later.”

The Everton and Australian legend has a strong connection with the Middle East, he says that he loves going there on holidays as well as spending time there with the Australian national team.

“I know what the experience is like. I have lived and breathed it.”

“I have played in two Asia Cups and I have got great connections with a lot of important people overseas.”

“I come on holiday in the Middle East a lot and I embrace the weather and the culture.”

Some possible sticking points could be that he has two years left on his contract with Everton, and a real emotional attachment to the Merseyside club and its fans.

Everton signed Cahill in 2004 from Milwall, and the Australian has been a major success at Goodison – earning cult-hero status and a place amongst Everton’s legends.

He is also Australia’s top goal scorer at major tournaments, having scored three goals at the 2006 & 2010 World Cups.

Cahill has certainly fallen down the pecking order at Goodison Park in recent seasons though, he no longer has the legs to make those lung-bursting runs into the box, and his influence on games has waned considerably.

Marouane Fellaini has proved towards the end of the season that he has the ability to play behind the striker (the “Cahill” role), and Everton manager David Moyes’ recent comments about Fellaini being Cahill’s successor indicate that the Toffees are already planning for life without Cahill.

What do you think? Has Tim Cahill done all he can with Everton?
