Is this the transfer to revitalise Chelsea’s season?

Gary Cahill had been the topic of transfer rumours throughout last summer’s transfer window but ended up staying with Bolton in the end. With them now struggling and his price having decreased, the deal taking him to Stamford Bridge is almost completed.  A price was agreed between the two clubs last month but Villas-Boas revealed the two parties were ‘miles apart’ when it came to personal terms. This seems to have been resolved and Cahill’s move to West London is imminent.

Chelsea have struggled in defence so far this season with defensive mishaps costing vital points. Title contenders at the beginning of the season, Chelsea now have to turn their attention to securing Champions League football for the club next year or risk facing another managerial change, as Ambramovich is notorious for getting fed up with his management team. Ambramovich has overseen 7 managers at Stamford Bridge since his takeover in 2003 as he hopes to achieve Champions League success and nothing less.

Maybe what Luiz needs is that challenge, someone that can threaten his place in the team and leave him watching on from the bench, forcing him to improve his performances.

I believe Gary Cahill and John Terry would forge a solid partnership at the back. If this partnership worked on club level it could also be adopted for England for the European Championships during the summer. Cahill has lost some credibility due to the performances of Bolton this season but this does not affect his skill.

The skill and ability is still there, it’s just been overshadowed at times due to the results. However, with this move Cahill can build his reputation back up again at a top club, somewhere that he needs to be. Gary Cahill has the skill levels to cope with European football and can become one of the first names on the teamsheet for England.

Both parties need this transfer. Chelsea need a defender with Premier League and international experience, something that Gary Cahill can offer. Cahill himself needs to be at a team that can challenge for trophies, with the addition of regular European football.

The deal caters for both interests and will not only be beneficial this season, but also beyond that. Gary Cahill can be the player to partner Terry in defence now, while also taking his place when the Captain hangs up is boots and waves farewell to Chelsea. Gary Cahill could be the player to swing Chelsea’s fortunes.
