With all the goalkeepers currently in the Premier League, Arsene Wengerbelieves he has one of the best inWojciech Szczesny and envisages a bright future for the 21-year-old polish shot-stopper, despite only playing half a season as the number one since his debut last year.
Szczesny left Poland for London in 2006 at the age of 15 and spent much of the 2009/10 season on loan at Brentford after graduating from the academy.
Wenger’s assurances over playing opportunities convinced him to sign a new deal when his contract was due to expire at the end of last season. A smart piece of business in my opinion, considering the fact that Wenger couldn’t find a good enough replacement for Jens Lehmannwhen the German left three years ago.
Arsenal had to rely on Manuel Almunia and Lukasz Fabianski, who at the time were a pair you wouldn’t put much faith in due to their calamitous nature. However, despite their poor performances, Wenger resisted the temptation to buy an experienced goalkeeper, though the Frenchman did come close to singing Fulham’s Mark Schwarzer last year – a deal I’m glad never went through. If it had we may not have seen Shezza for a while.
Following his bright start, Wenger had this to say about Szczesny:
‘He is one of the best already in his first season [in the starting lineup].
‘He has, like the team I must say, a promising future. We are confident that if he keeps his attitude and determination to do well he can be one of the best.
‘I wouldn’t like to put too much pressure on him. My secret belief is that he shouldn’t set any limitations on his progress and personally I am confident that he can let other people judge how good he is.’
A strong and confident individual who organises his defence is unexpected of a player his age. But that is what he brings to the table other than his world class skills in-between the sticks, which has made him a vital component in this new look Gunners side.
Wenger believes the young Pole will continue to improve, after displacing Fabianski as number one for both club and country. In my opinion, this mostly comes down the youngster’s determination which he hopes – come Euro 2012 – will help him in his quest to become one of the world’s best.
Wenger continued by saying:
‘I have shown with my decisions that I am a great believer in Wojciech.
‘The rest, how far he can go, I wouldn’t like to predict. That is what a career is all about.
‘I believe that as soon as you lose that sharpness to improve you are in trouble, no matter how young you are.
‘That’s why I would just say, ‘keep your attitude and you will have a bright future’.’
Well if Szczesny continues to progress, which seems highly likely, then that number one jersey looks filled for the next 15 years at Arsenal.
Whenever Wenger rarely buys during the transfer windows, I sometimes think to myself is it due to the quality of players that our youth academy produces? Well it certainly seems so. However, we do need to buy to add some much needed experience.
But when it comes to the goalkeeping department, Szczesny has it wrapped up nicely.
Only Swansea’s Vorm has kept more clean sheets than our very own Shezza this season. But I can’t help but agree with Wenger that we do have the leagues best keeper in our grasps.

To me, only Hart can compare to Szczesny in the league. The guy is just amazing. I can see him becoming the captain of the club in the next 6-7 years if not prized away from us by the rich bullies.

A true world class goal keeper. Arsenal have missed so much they haven’t a true world class keeper since Lehmann and now they get it in a young age this time. Seaman Lehmann and now we got Sczceney.
