Mesut Ozil has gained a fair share of fans with his performances in the World Cup. The German playmaker has been essential to his team as they finished top of their group and then thrashed England in first knockout phase. Although already a huge talent, Ozil was barely known outside Germany prior to the World Cup yet now every big club out there is clamouring for his signing.
And according to some sources Barcelona are one of those clubs. The Spanish champions already have a squad most managers would kill to get ahold of but they’re always looking for extra quality and Ozil could prove an alternative to current targets Fernando Torres, Juan Mata and Cesc Fabregas. He’s versatile, young, and would definitely be cheaper than the other options as he only has a year left on his contract with Werder Bremen and could go for as cheap as €20 million as a result.
Ozil’s agent has moved to quash any rumours regarding a possible move but the fact remains that Werder will probably want to sell their key man if he is unwilling to sign a new deal with the club. And what player could turn down Barcelona if they came calling?
Ozil’s decision may hinge on how likely he is to play at Barcelona as no top young player wants to sit on the bench constantly, playing second fiddle to more established players. Barcelona like to give their squad players playing time but there is a big difference between regular first team football and being rotated.
Competition for Ozil remains fierce with Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, Real Madrid and a host of others said to be interested in signing the Werder man. It’s unlikely we’ll see a conclusion to this transfer saga until Germany’s participation in the World Cup is over with but Ozil certainly has options available to him. Will the Spanish champions prove the most attractive option?
