Barcelona-based daily Sport is reporting that Barcelona are ready to launch a bid for Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo. The Spanish Under-21 international only moved to the capital club from Valladolid in the summer in a €6 million move but Asenjo has fallen out of favour with manager Quique Sanchez Flores as Atletico flounder in the lower half of the table and Atletico have recently preferred youth team graduate David De Gea between the sticks.
Asenjo was very highly rated whilst at Valladolid and is believed to be Spain’s future number 1 when Real Madrid’s Iker Casillas finally retires. The step up to Atletico has not worked out though and now Barca are ready to move for the man who could prove Victor Valdes’ long term replacement.
The chance to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world and learn under the wing of Valdes is an opportunity that Asenjo will not want to miss and Sport report that the only obstacle blocking the move is Atletico who will want to make a profit on the talent if they do decide to let him leave the club.
